2022 Florida Hurricane Season: Cost Billions Projected
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Although the official hurricane season doesn’t start unit June first, businesses in Florida are already preparing for the worst.

Dr. Phil Klotzbach and his team at Colorado State University have already issued their pre-season forecast – 19 named storms, nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes. All of those predictions above the 30-year averages of 14, seven and three, respectively.

This could potentially mean billions of dollars in damages, as well as lost revenue for businesses who may have to close their doors for an extended period of time. One way to protect your business is to coat your roof. More details below.

Storm names for 2022:

What are the five different hurricane categories?

There are five different categories for hurricanes: Category 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. A Category 1 hurricane is the weakest type of hurricane and a Category 5 hurricane is the strongest.

Category 1 hurricanes are usually weaker storms with wind speeds of 74-95 mph. They can still cause some damage, such as downed trees and power outages.

Category 2 hurricanes have wind speeds of 96-110 mph. They can cause more significant damage, such as roof damage and power outages that last for a longer period of time.

Category 3 hurricanes have wind speeds of 111-129 mph. They can cause major damage, such as structural damage to buildings and widespread power outages.

Category 4 hurricanes have wind speeds of 130-156 mph. They can cause catastrophic damage, such as major flooding and damage to infrastructure.

Category 5 hurricanes have wind speeds of 157 mph or higher. They can cause complete destruction, such as severe flooding and complete damage to buildings.

Hurricanes form over warm ocean waters. The water vapor rising from the ocean surface condenses and forms thunderstorms. The thunderstorms release heat, which warms the air and causes it to rise. This process is called convection.

The warm air rises and forms a low pressure area in the atmosphere. The rising air spins around the low pressure area and creates a rotating column of air. This column of rotating air is called a vortex.

As the vortex spins, the winds pick up speed. If the vortex spins fast enough, it can form a hurricane.

What are the projected damages for 2022 hurricanes?

The potential damages for Florida businesses due to hurricanes can be significant. Hurricane damage can include wind damage, flooding, and damage to infrastructure. Wind damage can cause roofs to collapse, windows to break, and signs to fall. Flooding can damage inventory, equipment, and buildings. Damage to infrastructure can cause power outages, water shortages, and transportation disruptions.

To prepare your business for a hurricane, you should have a plan in place for how to protect your property and keep your employees safe. You should also have a plan for how to communicate with your employees and customers before, during, and after the hurricane.

Some steps you can take to prepare your business for a hurricane include:

1. Create a hurricane preparedness plan.

2. Identify a safe place for your employees to shelter during the hurricane.

3. Stock up on supplies, such as food, water, and first aid supplies.

4. Charge all of your devices in case you lose power.

5. Back up your important data.

6. Keep cash on hand in case ATMs are not working.

7. Make sure your insurance is up to date.

8. Have a plan for how you will communicate with your employees and customers before, during, and after the hurricane.

By taking these steps, you can help protect your business from the potential damages that a hurricane can cause.

What can potentially mitigate these damages?

Commercial roof coatings can help protect your business from the potentially damaging effects of hurricanes. Roof coatings can provide a barrier against wind and water damage, as well as help to prevent damage from flying debris. In addition, roof coatings can reflect sunlight, which can help to keep your building cooler and reduce the amount of energy needed to cool it.

Applying a commercial roof coating is a cost-effective way to help protect your business from the damaging effects of hurricanes. For more information about commercial roof coatings, contact a local commercial roofing contractor.
