Home Maintenance Checklist: 5 Things to Do for Spring

The beautiful, sunny days of spring are finally here. It is time to refresh your home and tackle those maintenance and repair projects you put on hold in winter.

Completing the necessary home improvement tasks in early spring will let you relax through the rest of the season, knowing your house is in top shape. Follow this home maintenance checklist to keep your home fresh and comfortable this spring:

Get the roof repair work done

Cold weather and winter debris can cause severe damage to your roof. Once the snow has cleared, be sure to inspect your roof right away for missing or broken shingles and signs of leaks and cracks.

A roof repair work is a job reserved for the pros, so do not try to do it on your own. If you push through with your DIY plan, you run the risk of damaging your roof materials and voiding your warranty.

Check the gutters

Gutters play a very important role in protecting your house structure from water damage. If your gutter system is broken or clogged, the rainwater could end up around your foundation, leaking into your interior. To make sure you can rely on your gutters during the rainy days of the season, you should give a good clean in early spring.

Remove leaves, branches, and other debris from your gutters using a plastic scoop. Then, flush it out with water to get rid of the remaining small debris. If your gutters need repair or replacement, do not hesitate to ask for help from the pros.

Clean and reseal windows

Make it a part of your home spring cleaning to wash your windows. According to cleaning experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute, a dry, cloudy day would be the best time to wash your windows. Performing the task in hot weather can cause hard-to-remove streaks.

Moreover, do not forget to check for leaky seals around your windows. You can help reduce the load on your air conditioner this hot season by sealing air leaks. The United States Department of Energy says heat gain through windows is responsible for 25 per cent to 30 per cent of residential cooling energy use.

Test run all smoke and fire alarms

Take the time to make your home safer; check and test run your smoke and fire alarms once every month. Spring would be the perfect time to replace the batteries of your safety devices. The United States Fire Administration requires homeowners to replace their smoke detector batteries once or twice a year.

Service your AC

To prepare for the cooling season, do not forget to have your air conditioner serviced by a professional team. Scheduling an AC repair in early spring will reduce the risk of system breakdowns throughout the hot season.

HVAC experts can help you increase the energy efficiency of your AC, saving you money on your monthly cooling bills. Don’t try to put off the needed repairs of your home air conditioning system. Otherwise, you’ll be facing bigger and more expensive system issues later on. Get in touch with a reputable HVAC company in your local area today!
