Rear-End Accidents are not Always Fender Benders

FRONT-END COLLISIONS INVOLVING VEHICLES ARE DANGEROUS

Due to their frequency, many people incorrectly assume that a rear-end accident in Colorado Springs is harmless. There is no truth to this. Particular parts of the body are especially vulnerable to injury in rear-end crashes. Rear-end collisions often cause serious head, neck, and shoulder injuries. Such injuries could permanently alter one’s life.

A rear-end collision can cause permanent paralysis or even death in the worst cases. Whatever the severity of your rear-end collision, you should discuss your legal possibilities with a Colorado Springs personal injury attorney.

Injured parties with legal representation may be better able to protect their right to compensation for damages suffered in a rear-end collision.

WHAT INJURIES MAY RESULT FROM A REAR-END COLLISION

One of the most common injuries in a rear-end collision is whiplash. Whiplash is a term used to describe a sprain or strain of the soft tissues in the neck. The term “soft tissues” refers to non-bony structures such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and other similar structures.

Whiplash, as defined by Spine Universe, happens when there is a sudden change in the curvature of the upper back and neck, such as in a collision. The neck is vulnerable because of its range of motion, making it a common site for such injuries.

Muscle tightness or spasms in the neck or upper back; discomfort with neck movement; headache and disorientation (also symptoms of a concussion); trouble swallowing, chewing, or speaking; hoarseness; odd sensations like burning or tingling; shoulder pain; and upper back pain are all signs of whiplash.

It’s possible that these symptoms would manifest right after an incident. Even months after a car crash, these symptoms can appear. Therefore, getting medical attention immediately following an injury is essential, even if you don’t feel hurt.

Injuries sustained from a car crash caused by whiplash

Whiplash incidents are usually handled with extreme caution. Patients are generally encouraged to engage in as much movement as they can tolerate reducing muscle stiffness. If a cervical collar is prescribed, it will be worn for no more than a few days at most.

Patients may be advised to use cold and/or heat to alleviate discomfort, muscle spasms, and inflammation. Medications can be used to treat these symptoms as well. If whiplash symptoms don’t disappear after a few weeks, you might want to see a doctor.

This method can potentially improve circulation, re-establish motion, and speed healing to alleviate whiplash symptoms. A greater variety of invasive surgical options and therapeutic modalities are available for severe cases of whiplash. The good news is that therapy may alleviate symptoms for most people who suffer from whiplash.

Accidents that cause rear-end collisions can cause more severe injuries than only whiplash. Injury severity and permanency may dramatically increase in rear-end crashes.

Minor head, neck, and upper back injuries are possible from a whiplash incident. On the other hand, paralysis could arise from a severe injury to these areas. The head and neck are the protective home of the central nervous system, which protects the brain and spinal cord.

An individual’s survival could be perilous due to a brain or spinal cord injury. A minor concussion may heal independently, but more severe brain injuries might lead to permanent mental impairment.

While a minor spinal cord sprain could get well independently, more catastrophic injuries might need surgery. Serious damage to the spinal cord can cause paralysis. Sufferers of paralysis, whether temporary or permanent, may experience serious disruptions to their daily lives. Injured parties have a legal right to seek compensation from the negligent driver who caused their injury.

Damages can include monetary losses from lost wages, diminished future earning potential, loss of enjoyment of life and daily activities, paralysis-related home or vehicle modifications, past and future medical bills, occupational and physical therapy, pain management, and other related expenses.

There have been multiple severe rear-end collisions in Colorado.

Real People in Colorado often suffer serious injuries or even death due to rear-end collisions. According to Colorado Today, a woman lost her life after her Santa Fe was slammed into the back of a public transportation bus. Even the child sitting in the rear of the bus walked away unscathed. The Santa Fe driver was able to walk and communicate after the accident. A few whiles later, she began having breathing problems and was sent to Penrose St. Francis Hospital, where she ultimately passed away.

These kinds of mishaps frequently occur in different parts of the United States. In Pueblo, two persons were killed after their automobile was hit from behind. The motorist has been arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of DUI. In a tragic turn of events, a high school senior in Monument lost his life when his driving vehicle collided with the rear end of a stopped school bus. Fox 31 Denver reports that the bus driver and another child passenger were unhurt.

All too often, tragically fatal rear-end car accidents have often been occurring as of late. They illustrate how a seemingly insignificant rear-end collision can cause serious, even fatal, injuries.
