A Complete Guide on Green Hydrogen

A Complete Guide on Green Hydrogen

Major countries all over the world are moving together to reduce their reliance on carbon. Therefore, they are relentlessly looking for a cleaner source of energy to achieve decarbonizing by the year 2050. One of the new emerging energy technologies would be Green Hydrogen. Take note that hydrogen accounts for 2% of the total CO2 emission. Let us find out how it can have a huge impact in the coming years.

What is Green Hydrogen?

The quality of our life has greatly depended on the availability of energy. Based on the report, the demand for energy globally will increase up to 30% by the year 2040. We all know that energy today is reliant on oil and coal, and burning them would mean that more CO2 will be released into the air, which will contribute to the worsening climate change.

By finding ways on how to decarbonize the planet, we will have a better future to look forward to. It means that we need energy that is more sustainable, accessible, and efficient.

Green Hydrogen is based on the concept of hydrogen generation through a process known as electrolysis. With this method, an electric current will extract the hydrogen element from the oxygen found in water. If this is successful, we will be able to produce a kind of energy that will not inject carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Nonetheless, there are still some valid questions regarding the viability of this project, as mentioned by Richard Bishara. It entails a high production cost that we may not be able to sustain as we develop cheaper and more efficient renewable and cleaner energy.

What Are the Advantages of Green Hydrogen?

Before countries would move towards using Green Hydrogen, they will have to understand the importance of this renewable energy first. Here are some positive points to ponder about.

  • Sustainable- Green Hydrogen is 100% sustainable energy. It will not emit any toxic or polluting gasses during the production or combustion process.
  • Storable- Compared to other forms of energy today, it would be relatively easy to store this element. Therefore, we can also use it for different purposes other than using it immediately after completing the production.
  • It is Versatile- You can transform Green Hydrogen into synthetic gas or electricity and use it for different purposes such as for mobility, industrial, domestic, or commercial purposes.
  • Easy to Transport- By combining it with the natural gas at the proper ratio, it would be able to move through pipes and to the infrastructure.

Nonetheless, it also comes with some disadvantages. For instance, we’ve already mentioned the high cost that comes with the production process. Also, the energy consumption required in production is higher.

Some safety issues should be raised such as the volatility and flammability of the hydrogen element.  Richard Bishara reiterates that the company needs to lay down a comprehensive safety measure to prevent explosions and leakage.

Green Hydrogen is now being used as an energy source in different countries such as France, Russia, and the US. Japan is moving further ahead by building an economy that relies on hydrogen. As we find more accessible and cleaner sources of energy, we will be able to enjoy a better quality of life without harming our environment.
