Fatigue can be a chronic disease according to the National Library of Medicine. This can lead to that crash you feel in the middle of your workday. Your boss may see you dozing and that can spell trouble. Before you get called to HR, try these Five energy boosters.
- Get plenty of rest. That may seem very obvious, but the average person does not get enough sleep. Apple and their amazing watch has been tracking folks and the average American gets under 7 hours of sleep. You need 8-9 hours of sleep. Don’t try adding a full hour at once. Try adding 15 minutes a day for a week or two and then add another 15 minutes of sleep, until you get 8 or more hours of sleep each night.
- Stay Hydrated. Your body does not function well without enough water. We are over 70% water and we need to stay hydrated. This includes water and drinks with electrolytes. Some nutritionists also include coffee and tea. You need to drink half your body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 180 pounds, you will need to drink 90 ounces of water daily to stay hydrated.
- Move Around. It may sound weird but exercise and movement will give you energy. If you are drowsy, get some fresh air and walk for a few minutes. Movement triggers your body to burn stored calories and produce energy. When you are sitting all day, your body thinks you are ready for hibernation. It stores energy as fat so you will survive and it stops all unnecessary processes. Moving will help you feel alive and it will energize you. Consult your physician about how much activity you can tolerate as too much of a good thing can be bad as well.
- Eat Right. Nutrition is the key to good health and having the energy you need. Those chips and that candy aren’t doing you any good. It may give a short burst of energy, but then you crash hard. You know that you need the vitamins and minerals that vegetables give you. Allen Family Nutrition gives a free consult for proper nutrition. Their certified nutritionists will analyze what you are eating and help you come up with a better plan.
- Some Times You Supplement. If you are really struggling to stay awake and you have followed the previous tips, you may have to supplement. This may mean vitamins to address poor nourishment or energy drinks. Most commercial drinks will cause jitters or crashes though. You want to find a drink with all natural ingredients. Caffeine from green tea is one of the most natural and it produces more energy than regular caffeine.
So it really does boil down to eating right, exercising and getting good sleep. You want to be careful of becoming dependent on any substance for energy. Many people turn to caffeine and ignore proper nutrition. This is a recipe for disaster and one we hope you will now avoid.
