The Atlantic Tech Case Against the Data Vendor Handoff Model

The Atlantic Tech Case Against the Data Vendor Handoff Model

Most companies assemble their market intelligence from a relay of vendors, each responsible for one leg of the race and none accountable for the finish. Atlantic Tech, the Cheyenne, Wyoming data intelligence company Peter Kazan founded in 2020, was built on the argument that the relay itself is where the value gets lost.

How the Handoff Model Became the Industry Default

The fragmentation of the data business made sense to the people selling it. One class of firms specializes in gathering information, another in aggregating and licensing it, a third in enriching and reselling it, and a final layer of platforms and agencies in putting it to work. Each stage could be optimized, priced, and pitched in isolation, so the industry grew up as a supply chain because a supply chain was easier to sell than a system.

The buyer inherits the assembly problem. A company stitching together a collection of vendors, a data marketplace, an enrichment tool, and an activation platform is betting that four separately optimized parts will behave like one machine. Kazan founded Atlantic Tech on the opposite bet: that the value of information lives in the connections between those stages, and connections are exactly what handoffs break.

What Falls Out of the Data Every Time It Changes Hands

The first casualty is context. A signal worth acting on carries more than a name and a firmographic profile; it carries what a buyer was researching, how recently, and with what apparent urgency. Each transfer between vendors flattens that texture into whatever fits the receiving system’s schema. Definitions drift, freshness stamps disappear, and the trail back to the original behavior goes cold. By the time the information reaches the team spending money against it, what has survived, while the why and the when have not.

The pattern is familiar to anyone who has bought data at scale. A segment that performed in testing goes quiet in production because the behavior behind it was months old before the license was even signed, and nobody in the chain could have said so, because the freshness information fell out two handoffs earlier.

Atlantic Tech’s answer begins at the source. The company gathers intent-based data through its own collection systems, and because the same proprietary software carries a signal from capture to deployment, the context that makes it valuable arrives intact.

The Incentive Problem No Contract Can Fix

The handoff model also misallocates funds. A data vendor is paid when the file is delivered, and its revenue is untouched by whatever happens in the campaign or the trade that follows. The buyer carries all execution risk, while the sellers upstream carry none. That misalignment is structural rather than a question of bad actors; service agreements govern volume, format, and delivery dates because those are the only things a vendor actually controls.

Integration rewires the economics. When the organization that collects a signal is the same one that acts on it, the cost of poor quality falls exactly where quality is made. Atlantic Tech absorbs the outcome of every collection choice it makes. No SLA can replicate that kind of built-in accountability.

Where Speed Goes to Die Between Vendors

Latency is the quietest failure of the vendor chain, and it compounds as decision cycles across the economy keep shortening. A signal that was current at capture spends days or weeks in aggregation, licensing, onboarding, and field mapping before anyone can act on it. In the sectors where Atlantic Tech works, logistics and commodity trading, that lag can convert intelligence into history, because the conditions that produced the signal have already moved.

“The real advantage isn’t having more data,” Kazan said. “It’s knowing exactly what to do with it, at the moment it matters.”

The moment it matters is the part that the handoff model cannot deliver. No individual vendor in the chain is necessarily slow, yet the gaps between them consume the timeliness that made the data worth buying in the first place.

The Feedback Loop the Industry Severed

A less visible cost sits at the other end of the process. In a vendor chain, results never travel backward. The team deploying the data learns which signals actually predicted engagement or market movement, and the firms that collected those signals never hear about it. Collection methods stay frozen while the market changes, because the information that would improve them is stranded downstream.

Inside an integrated data pipeline, the loop closes by default. Deployment outcomes flow back into how Atlantic Tech’s systems weigh, source, and prioritize signals, so the intelligence improves with use. The difference is that a supply chain moves data one time, while a real system compounds what it learns with every pass.

One System Instead of a Supply Chain

Atlantic Tech’s structure is the argument made physical. Insight collection, audience targeting and engagement, and data management systems run as one end-to-end operation on software the company built and owns. Renting third-party tools at any stage would reintroduce handoffs within the building, so the company builds instead.

“Information is the most potent currency in the modern economy, but its value depends entirely on how it’s used,” Kazan said. “If you separate intelligence from execution, you lose precision. We built Atlantic Tech to keep those two things inseparable.”

That discipline reflects how Kazan builds generally. His operating philosophy favors precision over scale for its own sake and restraint in how ambition is executed, and owning the full pipeline makes that restraint enforceable, since the company grows only as fast as its systems can carry quality forward.

The choice trades convenience for control. Off-the-shelf assembly is faster to stand up and easier to staff, and Kazan’s view is that the trade runs decisively the other way once real decisions and real capital depend on the output.

The Case, Measured in Precision Rather Than Volume

The vendor handoff model persists because it is easy to procure, easy to budget, and familiar to everyone involved. The case Atlantic Tech makes against it is measured in precision: signals that keep their context, incentives that hold real weight, timing that keeps its value, and a system that keeps learning. For buyers weighing market intelligence services, the meaningful difference between providers is where the chain breaks between a signal and the action taken on it. Atlantic Tech’s answer is that it never breaks, because there is no chain.
