Ways to Prepare for Your Driving Test

Ways to Prepare for Your Driving Test

Getting a driver’s license is a rite of passage for many young people, and it can be one of the most terrifying yet rewarding experiences. The process includes learning how to drive and passing both a theory and pratical exam. A driving test is typically divided into two different parts.

Even if you know what to expect, it can still be nerve-wracking trying to get through the practical examination. That said, don’t let nerves or anxiety get in the way of your success! Read on to find out how to prepare for your driving test, with tips from professionals who have been there before you.

General tips

Take a look at our general tips for the driving test.

  1. Familiarise yourself with how licensing works, both provisional and full licenses.
  2. Practice on the road in either your own, or a family member’s vehicle before you take your driving test.
  3. Know the rules of the road and study them daily before taking your driving test.
  4. Request a mock driving test from your driving instructor to help prepare.
  5. Make sure you have a car that is in good condition and has been inspected by a licensed mechanic before taking your final exam, if using your own vehicle. If you use a driving school, your instructor will have a frequently maintained and fully insured vehicle.

What happens during the driving test?

The driving test consists of two parts, a theory exam and a practical examination. The theory exam is typically taken first and is usually a computer-based test of multiple-choice questions on topics such as road safety, traffic signs and general driving knowledge. You will be graded on your understanding of the questions and given one point for each question you get right. A certain percentage of correct answers must be achieved to pass your theory test.

The second part of the driving test is the practical examination. You will be accompanied by an examiner and will usually drive one of a few pre-determined routes. The examiner will look at your driving skills, road safety knowledge and log any mistakes, usually classed as major or minor faults.

How to prepare for the theory part of the exam

The theory exam is where you’ll need to know all of the rules of the road. The examiner will ask you questions about driving, car maintenance, and road safety. It’s a good idea to have a basic understanding of these topics before you take the exam.

There are two ways to prepare for the theory exam:

– Study on your own: Popular study guides from sites like Driving Test Success may help with this process. They provide information about how to pass your test as well as what to expect during the practical examination.

– Take a course: Most driving schools offer courses that prepare students for both parts of their driving exam. These courses typically last from 6 hours up to 12 hours, depending on the level of instruction needed.

How to prepare for the practical part of the exam

The most important thing to do is study the Highway Code, if taking your driving test in the UK. This is the starting point in learning to drive. Beyond this, once you have a good understanding of the rules of the road, it’s important to spend as much time as possible driving on the roads. You can’t have too much experience before taking your driving test. Whether you are receiving instruction from a friend or family member or having professional driving lessons, the number of hours you have spent on the road in preparation will have an effect on your actual driving test. It’s important also to make sure you are rested before your test. The more confident you are, the better your chances of passing are.

What to do when you fail a driving test

If you failed only one section of your exam, it’s important to determine what went wrong, assess why, and adjust and move on to better prepare for a second time pass. It’s common to fail one or both parts of the driving test and isn’t the end of the world. It’s important to not get disheartened and learn from mistakes. Did you not know how to answer a question? Or did you forget something?

Spend time to discover what your weaker areas of knowledge or practical ability, and focus on these as a priority. You’ll soon have a replacement driving test booked and a chance to pass both of your tests and get out on the road on your own.

Conclusion

A driving test isn’t easy. But with these tips, you’ll be sure to pass your driving test the first time! Take your time, learn and practice as much as possible, and you’ll be driving by yourself in no time at all.
