Common Types of Brain Injuries That Occur in Texas Car Accidents

Common Types of Brain Injuries That Occur in Texas Car Accidents

If you are involved in a Texas car accident, you can experience various injuries. While some are more serious than others, the most concerning injury you may sustain is a brain injury.

Brain injuries can be serious, whether you experience symptoms immediately after the accident or weeks or months later. It is important to seek medical treatment after a car accident to be evaluated and have a doctor determine if you have experienced any type of traumatic brain injury (TBI).

If it is determined that you have experienced a TBI and the accident was caused by the fault or negligence of another party, a Corpus Christi TBI lawyer can be an invaluable resource.

Along with hiring an attorney to help you take the proper legal steps after an accident, understanding common brain injuries will help you see why seeking medical treatment is so important.

Car Accident Caused TBIs

You can experience several brain injuries in a car accident. Some of the most common injuries seen after a Texas car accident include the following:

Concussion

The most common and known type of brain injury that occurs in car accidents is a concussion. This brain trauma occurs after an impact, sudden change in movement, or momentum. Usually, if you experience a concussion, you will lose consciousness for at least a short period of time. In some situations, they can have less serious symptoms, such as confusion and dizziness. If you do not get medical treatment immediately, you may experience more serious or permanent injuries.

Contusion

The word “contusion” means bruise. However, if it involves the brain, it becomes more complicated. A brain contusion can be serious and may require surgery to have it removed.

If a contusion occurs on both sides of your brain, it is called Coup-contrecoup. This means that the bruises occur on the impact site and the opposite side of the impact site. Put simply; it means you have “double bruising” of the brain.

Contusions may also appear as swelling and pain. Other risks are often associated with contusions, including blood clots in the brain, memory issues, cognition problems, and challenges speaking.

Diffuse Axonal

This brain injury occurs when the brain structures tear because of excessive head rotation. It’s actually a severe type of concussion. This brain injury can cause memory loss, migraines, severe headaches, seizures, and even cause you to collapse. In more serious cases, it can lead to a coma or even death. For mild cases, treatment is possible through rehabilitation.

Penetration

As the name suggests, a penetration injury is when something penetrates through or into the brain. This is considered an easily identifiable injury. If blood comes from your head, it means you have experienced a penetration injury. Sometimes, the injury is just to the skull, but it can reach the brain in more serious cases. This injury can cause significant blood loss, exhaustion, and issues with breathing.

Acquired Brain Injury

The force of the accident doesn’t cause an acquired brain injury. Instead, they typically result from rib and lung injuries, chest complications, blood loss, or throat injuries that impact the brain.

Contact an Attorney for Help with Your TBI Accident Claim

If you are involved in an accident that causes a TBI, be sure to contact an experienced Corpus Christi personal injury lawyer for assistance. The attorney you hire can review the facts of your case and help you recover the compensation you are entitled to. Personal injury attorneys charge a contingency fee, so you have nothing to lose by scheduling an initial appointment.
