Secure Your Home Today: Don’t Make These 6 Common Mistakes!

Making your home security a priority is essential, especially if you want to keep your family and belongings safe. Unfortunately, many people make common mistakes that can lead to costly and dangerous consequences. In order to protect yourself, it’s important to be aware of these mistakes and take the necessary precautions. Check out this blog post for more information on how to secure your home today!

Not having enough locks on your doors and windows

When it comes to keeping your home safe, there is no such thing as being too cautious. Yet, many homeowners make the mistake of not having enough locks on their doors and windows. While a single lock may deter some burglars, a determined thief will likely be able to defeat it with ease.

By adding multiple locks to your doors and windows, you can make it much more difficult for an intruder to gain entry to your home. Make sure you have more than one lock on each door and window, and that all locks are in good working order.

In addition, shutters and blinds deter burglars by making it difficult for them to see inside your home. They also make it more difficult for thieves to smash through a window. “If you want to secure your home, installing shutters is the way to go. They are an effective barrier against intruders and can give you peace of mind”, says shutter experts from Illawarra.

Leaving spare keys outside your home

One of the most common mistakes people make when it comes to home security is leaving spare keys outside their homes. Whether it’s hidden under a mat or in a concrete driveway, a spare key is an open invitation for burglars to come and make themselves at home. After all, if you’re comfortable leaving a key where anyone can find it, why wouldn’t a burglar feel the same?

If you want to keep your home safe and secure, it’s important to take measures to protect your spare keys. A better option is to give a spare key to a trusted neighbor or friend. If you must leave a key outside, invest in a durable lock box that can be securely attached to your home. This will help to deter would-be thieves and give you some peace of mind.

Posting about being away on social media

It’s finally summer vacation time! You and your family are headed out of town for a well-deserved break. But before you start posting about your trip on social media, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

First, remember to set your privacy settings so that only your friends and family can see your posts. There’s no need to advertise to the world that your home will be empty for the next week.

Second, avoid posting photos or status updates that give away too much information about your whereabouts. You never know who might be reading your posts, and you don’t want to make yourself a target for theft or burglary.

Although you may be eager to share photos of your amazing vacation, it’s important to remember that burglars may be watching. By avoiding these common social media mistakes when you’re away from home, you can help keep yourself and your belongings safe and sound.

Not locking up your valuables

It’s a sad fact, but homes are broken into every day. In most cases, the burglar is looking for easy pickings – valuables that are left out in the open or easily accessible.

One of the most common mistakes is failing to lock up valuables. Many people leave jewelry, electronics, and cash out in plain sight, making them easy targets for thieves. Unfortunately, even hiding these items in a drawer or closet isn’t enough – a determined burglar will take the time to find them.

So how can you best protect your valuables? The answer is twofold: by keeping them in a safe that is either bolted to the floor or hidden from view.

Bolting your safe to the floor makes it much more difficult for burglars to carry off, as they would need some serious tools to pry it loose. And even if they were able to get it out of your home, it would be easily traceable thanks to the serial number that is stamped on the bottom. Hiding your safe is another effective option, as it makes it much harder for burglars to find in the first place. Whether you tuck it away in a closet or behind furniture, make sure it’s not in plain sight.

Although it may be an inconvenience to have to lock up your valuables, it is a necessary step in preventing burglary and theft. By following these simple tips, you can help keep your home and belongings safe from criminals.

Not having a fire extinguisher in the kitchen

Homeowners forget that the kitchen is one of the most common places for fires to start. A recent study showed that 43% of all home fires begin in the kitchen, so it’s important to be prepared.

One way to do this is to make sure you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. While most people think of the living room or basement as being the most likely places for a fire, the kitchen is actually more dangerous. This is because there are more potential ignition sources in the kitchen, such as the stove, oven, or even the toaster.

In addition, there are often more flammable materials in the kitchen, such as cooking oil or grease. As a result, it’s important to have a fire extinguisher that is easily accessible in case of an emergency.

Another common mistake is not having a smoke detector in the kitchen. Smoke detectors are vital for early detection of fires, and they can save lives. Make sure you have at least one smoke detector in your kitchen, and test it regularly to ensure that it’s working properly. These simple tips can help keep your home safe from fire hazards.

Allowing strangers into your home without proper verification

Many people make the mistake of allowing strangers into their homes without properly verifying their identity first. Whether you’re letting a repairman in or accepting a delivery, it’s important to take the time to ensure that the person at your door is who they say they are. Otherwise, you could be putting yourself and your family at risk.

So how can you verify someone’s identity? One of the easiest ways to do this is to install a doorbell camera like the Ring Video Doorbell. This will allow you to see and speak to whoever is at your door without having to open it. You can also require that all visitors provide some form of identification, such as a driver’s license or passport, before entering your home.

Final Thoughts

Security is a top priority for homeowners, and it’s important to take the necessary precautions to protect your home and family. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can make your home more secure and reduce your risk of being a victim of burglary or theft. Have you made any of these mistakes?
