No matter how many surf vacations I took in my life, it seems like I never get tired of it, and I always want to experience new destinations and surf new waves. So, this time I packed my surfboard and headed to Central America for a new surf adventure.
First Stop- Panama
As a surf destination, Panama was always in the shade of its neighbor from north, Costa Rica. However, like many great things, eventually people find out about it. And still, you can find here wonderful waves with not too many people in the water.
During the summer months, from April till October, the pacific side of Panama receives consistent swells, and the most recommended beaches are Santa Catalina and Playa Venao. In the winter, though, it is best to make the journey to the Caribbean side and head to the beautiful surf towns Bocas del Toro. Other than crazy nightlife, you will find here great variety of breaks for all skill levels. From soft beach breaks to powerful barrels over a shallow reef, any surfer will find his perfect wave here. The only downside of Bocas del Toro is that the swell season is very short, and last only from December till March. If you are lucky enough to be here during these months, you can expect an unforgettable surf adventure.
Second Stop- Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a very popular surf destination. It’s been more than 2 decades that thousands of surfers from all over the world come here to ride beautiful waves and meet ocean lovers just like themselves. So yes, the popularity of Costa Rica comes with a price tag. first, it is extremely expensive, and second, all the lineups are always crowded. However, in return, you get a diverse coastline with consistent waves of all kinds. Whether you like beach breaks, point breaks, or reef breaks, here in Costa Rica you will find plenty of each. Pavones, for instance, in the southwest, is the second longest left wave in the world, so if there is a big south swell, you definitely don’t want to miss this one. On the small days, however, beaches like Dominical and Playa Hermosa are absolutely swell magnets that will always produce powerful waves. And finally, Santa Teresa offers the best combination between consistent year-round surf and great nightlife.
Last Stop- Nicaragua
Nicaragua is probably one of the most underrated surf destinations in the world. The quality of the waves is no less than amazing, and yet, it is not as popular as you would expect, which is a huge advantage these days.
During the summer months, from April till October, offshore winds blow almost every day, and meet the coming swells to create wonderful waves with glassy wall and epic barrels. the most famous surf beach is Popoyo, but you will find great waves also in Playa Maderas, Playa Colorado, and pretty much everywhere along the Pacific Coastline. If you are looking for an affordable surf destination with amazing waves and relatively low crowds, Nicaragua will be a perfect fit.
To sum up, Central America offers wonderful opportunities for surfers in their search for the perfect wave. Whit in a short flight from the US you can find yourself paddling on a beautiful wave in warm water surrounded by wild rain forests. Therefore, you should definitely put it on your checklist for your next surf vacation.
