Poses for Newborn Photography

Any experienced photographer will tell you that the key to capturing a beautiful baby portrait is to get down low and use natural light. But not every photo needs to be an up-close, intimate shot. A good set of poses will help you get the perfect picture.

When posing the baby, it’s a good idea to use natural light rather than artificial lighting as it helps to capture their expressions better. Try to get your subjects to look at each other or into the camera lens for some great images rather than directly into your lens—Research an experienced newborn lifestyle photography studio in Leesburg, VA, for the safest and most memorable results.

Here are some other great poses for newborn photography:

Baby in mom’s arms – Mom looks out at the camera with a loving expression; Baby’s head is turned towards mom or the camera or facing away from the camera with their back to us.

Family portrait – Mom holds Baby against her chest. Babies often look up to mom, and this is a great expression.

Side shot – Mom places the baby on the side of her body. A jacket or blanket helps cover the baby’s feet.

Lay down poses – Let baby get comfortable and have mom lay Baby across her lap with one arm under Baby’s legs, keeping his feet off the ground; This can also work with Baby lying on her back on a soft blanket or white bed sheet.

Cradle shot – A classic pose, the baby, laid on his side or back in mom’s arms with his head down towards mom’s lap.

Baby in dad’s arms – Dad holds baby with one arm behind Baby’s back, sometimes covering the feet; This often looks great when dad is wearing a suit or dressed up for some reason.

Full family shot – Babies can be in several poses in one photo. A few ideas for full family shots include Baby at mom’s hip, front and back, laying on the ground with one arm around mom or dad, dad holding baby’s foot, or laying on top of Baby.

The “selfie” shot can work either with just the two of you or a group shot. Baby is sitting in Mom’s lap and looking directly at the camera.

Baby in the towel – You may have seen this one, where the baby is wrapped in a long white bath towel; This works best with a bigger baby who is strong enough to hold up their head and not choke on the towel.

Mom holding Baby in her arms and leaning into dad – Whether it’s mom or dad, it’s always nice to see one parent leaning into the other for a bit of love. This one can look great with mom in a dress or top and dad in a suit.

Sleeping baby – This one has to be done carefully because you want the baby to be sleeping and comfortable, not fussy about having his head poked or body contorted.

Baby swimming – This works exceptionally well if you have two babies on each side of your body. Splashing around is also enjoyable, but please be sure they are crawling on dry ground.

Conclusion

Hopefully, these poses will help you get great shots of your little one. Try using a few different poses and work with the flow of things to get the best pictures.
