In the bustling streets of New York City, a young architect is making waves with her unique perspective and talent. Meet Paulina Escobar, a 24-year old architect hailing from Medellin, Colombia who has already made a name for herself in the field of architecture.
From an early age, Paulina had an innate sensibility for aesthetics, design, and creativity. Captivated by the interplay of shapes and colors, and beauty and functionality, she was driven to a career in architecture. For Paulina, architecture is the perfect blend of art and science, as it allows her to combine her passion for creativity and design with a pragmatic approach to problem-solving. Thus, she obtained her degree in architecture from Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, where she was awarded an honorable mention and later went on to win the award for the highest score in a national examination taken by all graduating architects.
Upon graduation, Paulina left Colombia to intern for a prestigious architectural firm in New York City. However, she did not leave her heritage behind, as it is deeply embedded into her designs. The country’s vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning natural landscapes are ever present in her work, and have informed her perspective on how to create spaces that foster interaction, connectivity, and inclusivity. Moreover, she draws inspiration from Colombia’s diverse natural environment to incorporate sustainable design principles into her projects and harmoniously integrate structures with their surrounding landscapes.
Naturally then, transitioning from Colombia to the United States presented unique challenges for Paulina, as she had to adapt her designs to a completely different culture while maintaining her own sense of identity. However, she quickly rose to the challenge, and was able to evaluate her new environment to propose unique but practical designs. Understanding the context she was working in and the people she was serving, Paulina was able to extend architecture beyond aesthetics.
Furthermore, working in New York City exposed Paulina not only to American culture but opened the doors to the world. Collaborating with colleagues from all over the world, Paulina’s identity as an architect underwent a transformative process as she adeptly integrated other perspectives into her point of view as a designer. This ability to morph and bridge cultures became her defining strength and competitive edge, making her a rare gem in the industry. Her success is a testament to the power of embracing diversity, incorporating perspectives, and responding to the unique needs of each project.
